Michael Yi

Strategy

Michael Yi is a current fourth year medical student at the Geisinger Commonwealth School of Medicine, has completed a research fellowship under the mentorship of Dr. Murad Alam at the Northwestern University, and is passionate about minority and disadvantaged populations. He has published in the JAAD, JID, JEADV, AODR, and the Journal of First-Generation Student Success, created multiple social media videos to improve awareness of health issues in minority communities, led numerous school-wide events, and has been a mentor for First-Generation Asian-American students and prospective medical students. In his free time, Michael enjoys reading, snowboarding, and finding the best tacos restaurants.

Asian Health Coalition Project:

As an ambassador, I am working on YouTube videos and shorts that discuss public health disparities that affect various minority populations. I have also taken part in the NIH’s Research Scholar Program for the past two years and presented my work on the association between dermatologic and psychological conditions in Asian-American populations at the Research Scholar Program’s Research Symposium.


Tsz Chun Marcus Chung

Strategy

Tsz Chun (Marcus) Chung immigrated from Hong Kong, achieved a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology from the University of California, Berkeley, and is currently a second year medical student at A.T. Still University – School of Osteopathic Medicine in Arizona. Tsz Chun’s commitment to healthcare stems from his belief that everyone deserves care, regardless of their background. He is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. His diverse work experience includes roles as a Community Outreach Worker, Medical Assistant, Specialty Mental Health Counselor, and Research Assistant. Tsz Chun has volunteered extensively, including coaching high school students on diabetes management and providing mental health support through hotlines. He has also spearheaded community projects such as organizing pepper spray distributions for self-defense in the Asian community and co-founding One Dollar Rides, a service providing affordable transportation.

Advancing Asian-American Health Through Qualitative Research

Join us on November 15, 2023 from 7-8:30pm EST with Dr. David Yang, a Research and EMS Fellow at Yale University Department of Emergency Medicine, for a research workshop that provides an introduction into qualitative research methods available in the field of AANHPI-related research. Dr. David Yang will present his own research, describe his experiences with research along his training journey, and share some opportunities that are available in the field. Kevin Riutzel, MS, DO

Strategy

Born in South Korea and raised in the greater LA area, Kevin Riutzel is a family physician currently working in Los Angeles, CA.  The clinic he works at is a federally-qualified health center in LA’s Koreatown primarily serving local AAPI communities, many of whom are the 1st generation in their families to immigrate to the U.S.

He has served in several roles for APAMSA including National President for three terms as well as National Pre-med Director, Region XII Director, and local chapter president.  He finished his undergraduate studies at UC San Diego and graduate studies at Columbia University.  After graduating from Touro University Nevada, he completed his training in family medicine at UC Irvine with a focus on integrative medicine.  He served as one of the chief residents while at UC Irvine.

Kevin takes a particular interest in mental health in AAPI communities along with providing an integrative and holistic approach to the care he offers to the communities he serves.


Daniel Pham, MD

Strategy

Dr. Daniel Pham will soon begin his residency as a Resident Physician in the first-ever Combined Internal Medicine and Psychiatry Program at the Medical College of Wisconsin Affiliated Hospitals. During his time as a medical student at the University of Oklahoma College of Medicine in Oklahoma City, he played an integral role in the formation of APAMSA’s inaugural chapter in Oklahoma, where he served as Senior Adviser and the chapter’s representative to the House of Delegates. Daniel also served on APAMSA’s national board, first as the Rapid Response Director and later as the Vice-President of Advocacy. Notably, he authored significant policy positions on race-conscious admission practices and racism in medicine, contributing to APAMSA’s history in national advocacy. In recognition of his outstanding service, Dr. Pham was honored with the National President’s Award for Distinguished Service in 2023. Beyond his medical pursuits, he is deeply passionate about local civic involvement, media, storytelling, and fostering solidarity. In his leisure time, he indulges in his guilty pleasure of following the latest anime season.


Nicole Ng, MD

Strategy

Nicole Ng is currently an Internal Medicine resident at the New York Presbyterian Hospital-Weill Cornell. As a third culture kid, she spent her formative years between Beijing, Hong Kong, and Vancouver. Nicole graduated from UCLA with a BS in Molecular, Cellular, and Developmental Biology. During undergrad, she spearheaded efforts to offer free health screenings for local Asian and Pacific Islander communities. Nicole completed her MD degree at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) School of Medicine, where she reestablished and led her local APAMSA chapter as Co-President. She went on to become a Regional Director and then the Academic Education and Research Director for National APAMSA. Outside of medicine, Nicole likes to write Yelp reviews, introduce her friends to hole-in-the-wall restaurants, and explore art/history museums.


Brandon Yan, MD, MPH

Strategy

Brandon Yan is a UCSF internal medicine resident physician dedicated to providing high-quality clinical care and bringing evidence to health policy reform. He previously served on the APAMSA National Board as Region VIII Director (2021) and Health Policy Director (2022-23). Brandon trained in policy analysis at Duke and public health at Harvard. As a researcher, Brandon primarily studies how public policy can help improve healthcare access, value, and equity. His published studies include those on Medicare Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs), cost-effectiveness of heart failure treatment guidelines, COVID-19’s impact on Asian Americans, U.S. elections and mental health, and the Affordable Care Act with citation in major media including the SF Chronicle, LA Times, US News & World Report, Newsweek, and KRON4 News. His research was the first to uncover why reduction in deaths from Medicaid expansion did not translate into reduction in population mortality. He led some of the first work on COVID-19’s impact on Asian Americans that went on to impact public policy at local, state, and national levels. He also serves as a consultant on public health policy.
